Driver missing after car mounts kerb in Sengkang, police seeking witnesses

A contributor walking towards Compass One on Sunday afternoon told Town Tales Pro he heard a loud screech and turned to see a silver sedan mounted on the kerb outside the shopping centre, its front bumper pressed against a lamp post.

"The driver got out, looked at the car for maybe ten seconds, then walked away towards the MRT station," the contributor, Mr Raj, said. "He did not call anyone. He did not wait. By the time I reached the car, he was gone."

According to Mr Raj, the incident occurred at approximately 2:15pm during a heavy downpour. He said the road surface was wet and the vehicle appeared to have skidded while turning into the car park entrance, mounting the pavement where pedestrians typically queue for buses.

No injuries reported

No pedestrians were standing at the spot when the car mounted the kerb, though Mr Raj noted that the area is usually crowded on weekend afternoons. He called the police non-emergency line and remained at the scene until officers arrived approximately 25 minutes later.

"The lamp post was dented but the car was still drivable," Mr Raj said. "That is probably why the driver thought he could just leave. But you cannot hit public infrastructure and walk away."

Hit-and-run concerns

Leaving the scene of an accident without reporting it may constitute an offence under Singapore law, depending on the damage caused and whether injuries were involved. Town Tales Pro has not received confirmation of an active police investigation, though Mr Raj said officers took his statement and copied details from his photograph of the vehicle before it was towed.

The story has prompted several contributors from Sengkang to share similar accounts of vehicles mounting kerbs near Compass One during wet weather, suggesting the junction layout may contribute to skidding incidents when drivers turn too sharply at speed.
